Here are tips on how to stay happy and healthy at holiday gatherings:

1. Eat beforehand

When you’re hungry you will eat – whatever is served! Especially at a festive holiday party where you might not be paying attention to what you’re popping into your mouth. Oops.

But if you eat something beforehand, it allows you to choose the foods that will support your health, while it smothers the cravings you would have experienced later. Don’t expect someone else to watch over you. No one really watches what is on your plate. They’re concerned with theirs.

2. Drink up! (with style)

If there is alcohol, keep a glass of water with a slice of lemon or lime glued to your hand. Add an umbrella toothpick if you are feeling fancy.  Many hosts want to be sure you are taken care of and will ask if they can get you something. “I’m fine, thanks. What a great party!”
